Home School Family Fitness: A Complete Curriculum Guide

by Bruce Whitney, Ph.D.

Front Cover of Book

“In my opinion this book is the top of the line for homeschooling families. It packs an abundance of useful information into its 155 pages. “Ways to Inspire Your Child” begins the book at step one, motivation. Additional motivational suggestions appear throughout the text. There are sections on strength, endurance, flexibility, and aerobic fitness. The indoor, outdoor, and snow games and the other sports and skills covered in the book are all modified for the home-school setting. Recommended equipment includes mostly items that many families already have, such as rolled-up, empty milk cartons, a baseball glove, a big inner tube, and a swing set. There are fitness test, lesson plans (for five units: Body Movement, Ball Skills, Rhythm and Dance, Tumbling and Gymnastics, and Swimming), and labs (specific technique checklists for basketball, tennis, football, softball, soccer, and volleyball). Dr. Whitney, who has extensive teaching experience, has created a tremendous resource for families, addressing fitness needs for those four to forty-something. He really brings fitness home!”

—Heart of Homeschooling Magazine, April 1996

“Written by a Ph.D. professor of physical education who is also a homeschooling father of seven children, this excellent, easy to use manual on physical education is designed from the ground up for use by homeschoolers young and old. Dr. Whitney emphasizes the fundamentals of fitness, but then presents fun and effective means for achieving and maintaining fitness through indoor and outdoor games you can--and will want to--do at home with one to four participants of similar or mixed ages. (How about the games titled Speedy Soccer, Frisbee Football, Deck Tennis, Cops and Robbers, and dozens more?) The book includes 40 weeks' worth of outline lesson plans, easy-to use and fully explained fitness tests, and thorough explanations of rules and proper technique and skills for a wide variety of popular sports and worthwhile physical activities. (How about training in correct technique for walking and running? Rhythm activities (including dance)? Basketball free throws? Football punts?) Truly: this is an astonishingly complete guidebook. Wish our PE teachers had been so creative! Oversized pb, lay-flat comb binding, illus, 155pp.”
